Your time in braces has come to an end! For almost everyone this is very exciting news. The hard work and commitment that you have put forth has resulted in a beautiful, beaming smile. Two weeks later a new journey begins… it is retainer time!

I cannot stress the importance of retention enough. Wearing your retainers results in a stable, healthy smile for a lifetime. Failing to wear your retainers can have very different results.

Teeth can move, which is why we are able to create such beautiful smiles. Even after we place the teeth in the most stable bite that we can, they will always have the memory of their former place in the mouth…and they may try to drift back there if not held in place!

If you have been though one of my consults, you may have heard me say, “retainers will be worn 21 hours per day for a period of time, then at some point, nights only for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.” Every one of my patients hears this, because if you do not wear your retainers as instructed your teeth will move. They might move a little or a lot, but after all of your hard work, even a little movement is too much.

You deserve a beautiful and healthy smile, and once you have it, you owe it to yourself to keep it, so wear your retainers every night!

If you are reading this blog and are interested in insuring that you maintain your new smile for a lifetime, look into our Retainer Replacement Program to add more value to your investment.

    Thanks Dr. Mauro!! Great article!

  5. Most people i dont think realize that retainers are a lifetime thing. Keep those smiles beautiful and wear your retainers :)

  6. I agree with Paula but I’m also amazed at how many just dont realize the importance of them in general or the fact we do know what we are talking about. So when they come in with teeth shifted and retainers that dont fit their surprise always amazes me. Especially when some of them seem to expect our doctors to just magically make them fit and the teeth realign. I know we have great doctors but …. :)

Really important information! Many of our patients think once the braces are off that they only have to wear the retainers for a short time and they are done w/ their treatment.
